Bless Her Heart: Senator Darline Graham (T-SC) Flubs Crucial National Security Questions

With time running out, Darline Graham’s attempt at damage control falls far short

If her Faux News interview was meant to allay concerns about whether she’s up to the job, it was the senator’s second missed opportunity in as many days.

Ever since Sen. Darline Graham decided to seek a full term of her own on Capitol Hill, the South Carolina Republican has confronted unavoidable questions about her qualifications. She was appointed to fill her brother’s vacancy on Capitol Hill, but as an actual Senate candidate, Graham has had to prove that she is up to the task of being more than just the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sister.

This week she faced a crucial test. With one week remaining before South Carolina Republicans chose a new U.S. Senate candidate for this year’s ballot, Graham participated in a debate against her intraparty rival, Rep. Ralph Norman. It was a unique opportunity to silence critics and prove she’s ready to serve in the institution known as the world’s most deliberative body.

With the pressure on, Graham flubbed the test.

Asked a straightforward question about U.S. policy toward Taiwan and the South China Sea, the appointed senator conceded, “I’m not on national security,” adding, “National security is not my thing.” (As part of the same debate, Graham also said, of her own home state, that South Carolina has a population of “50 million people.” She was off by about 45 million.)

@RalphHightower: Hon, you betta get up to speed on national security. Taiwan is a free republic. Communist China claims that it’s theirs. Taiwan is a major manufacturer of advanced computer chips.

The morning after the debate, Norman, Graham’s rival, told MS NOW’s Mychael Schnell that he “couldn’t believe it” when he heard her onstage comments. “It’s a little bit shocking,” the congressman added.

As other prominent Republicans joined the pile-on, making the case that Graham had effectively proved her critics right about her lack of preparation, the appointed senator went into damage control, seeking safe harbor. Naturally, this led her to Sean Hannity’s Faux News program.

At the beginning of the relatively brief segment, the host, whose close association with the Trump White House is hardly a secret, did his best to downplay what had happened the night before.

“So this issue of Taiwan came up last night, and I know people have made a big deal about it,” Hannity said. “And I’m like, ‘I wonder how many people around the country, if I gave them a map, could pick out Taiwan?’ I don’t think many. And not just, I mean, the whole country — never mind South Carolina.”

“Right,” Graham replied. “I think you’re 100% right, Sean.”

That’s certainly one way to look at this. The other is to realize that while many Americans may not be able to find Taiwan on a map, this is why we have a representative form of government in the first place. We hire people to powerful federal offices who are supposed to be qualified and knowledgeable, with the expectation that they can address the complex issues that regular folks aren’t familiar with.

The senator added, “You know, I tripped up on one question last night regarding Taiwan. But you know, I’ve said many times, I’m not a politician, certainly not a career politician. I don’t speak politician. You know, I was just honest. And I think that’s kind of a foreign concept.”

Except Graham is a politician — she’s currently a sitting senator who is currently running to continue in that powerful political office — and her answer wasn’t just unpolished; it was ignorant.

As the short interview continued, the Republican said, “I think people in South Carolina are more worried about making ends meet. They’re concerned about boys in girls’ sports. One lady talked to me extensively about that today.”

Amid tensions between a U.S. ally and our most important global rival, and as much of the world questions whether the war in Iran has weakened our ability to extend security assistance to our global partners, Lindsey Graham’s sister apparently thinks what really matters is transgender kids playing sports.

If the interview was intended to calm concerns about whether Darline Graham is up to the job, it was the second missed opportunity in as many days.
